The red flesh of a strawberry is not fruit. It is the flower base, the receptacle, swollen up into something juicy. The actual fruits are the tiny yellow specks on the outside that everyone calls seeds. Each of those specks is a separate dry fruit with a single seed inside, technically a nut.

So a strawberry is not one fruit. It is a couple of hundred fruits stuck to a swollen stalk. Botanists call that an aggregate accessory fruit: aggregate because there are many, accessory because the edible part grew from tissue that was not the ovary.

Raspberries and blackberries are aggregates too, but of a different kind. Each little bead is its own miniature stone fruit, closer in construction to a cherry than to a blueberry.

So what else is secretly a berry?

Once you apply the definition rather than the intuition, the supermarket rearranges itself:

  • Banana, the one that started this.
  • Tomato, which is why the fruit or vegetable argument never ends.
  • Cucumber, pumpkin, watermelon, all in a berry subgroup called a pepo, with a harder rind.
  • Avocado, a berry with one very large seed.
  • Chilli and bell pepper, berries with hollow middles.

Meanwhile blueberries and cranberries are true berries, so the everyday word does land correctly sometimes. It just does it by accident.

Does this mean the supermarket is wrong?

No, and this is worth saying plainly, because “actually, a banana is a berry” is often delivered as a gotcha.

Botany and cooking are answering different questions. A botanist asks how the fruit was built. A cook asks how it tastes and what it does in a pan. Both definitions are correct inside their own system. A tomato is a berry to a botanist and a savoury ingredient to everyone holding a knife.

What makes the banana fact worth knowing is not that other people are wrong. It is that “berry” turns out to be a precise structural term wearing a very casual disguise.
